Was Laapataa Ladies Copied from Arabic Film Burqa City? Viral Video Sparks Debate

Laapataa Ladies

Recently, Bollywood film Laapataa Ladies has come under controversy. A video comparing scenes from Laapataa Ladies and the 2019 Arabic short film Burqa City has gone viral on social media. Many netizens believe that Laapataa Ladies is not an original story but a copy of the Arabic film.

Was Laapataa Ladies Copied from Burqa City?

Directed by Kiran Rao, this show was released in 2024 and received critical acclaim. It was even selected as India’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. The film tells the story of two newlywed brides who accidentally get exchanged during a train journey because of their veils. This storyline closely resembles Burqa City, where a newlywed man loses his wife due to a mix-up involving burqas.

Fans have pointed out several similarities between the two films. One striking scene is when the husband goes to the police station and shows a picture of his wife, who is covered in a burqa in Burqa City and a ghoonghat in Laapataa Ladies. Many viewers are disappointed and feel that Bollywood often relies on copying ideas rather than coming up with original stories.

Some netizens also mentioned that the concept of Laapataa Ladies is similar to a 1999 Indian telefilm, Ghoonghat Ke Pat Kholi. This Doordarshan serial had a similar plot where brides were mistakenly swapped due to a mix-up at a railway station.
