Javed Akhtar Discusses Alcoholism and Its Role in the Failure of His First Marriage

Javed Akhtar, a well-known Indian screenwriter and lyricist, has recently shared his struggles with alcoholism and how it affected his first marriage to Honey Irani. In a candid conversation, he reflected on his past mistakes and the lessons he learned over the years.

Javed Akhtar’s Regretful Confession

In a recent interview with comedian Sapan Verma, Akhtar talked about his battle with alcohol during his younger days. He admitted that he wasted a significant part of his life drinking, which he called his “biggest mistake.” He gave up alcohol on July 31, 1991, realizing it was time to make a change.

Akhtar described himself as a “drunkard” and said that alcohol often led him to make impulsive decisions. He expressed regret over how his drinking habits impacted his relationships, particularly with his first wife, Honey Irani.

Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani got married in 1972 and had two children together, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. However, their marriage ended in 1985. Akhtar believes that his alcoholism played a significant role in the failure of their relationship. He said, “I regret the failure of my first marriage. It could have been saved.” He acknowledged that he often reacted negatively to minor issues while under the influence of alcohol.

He advised young people to avoid drinking, stating that many of his life’s mistakes were made when he was drinking. Akhtar emphasized the importance of making responsible decisions and staying away from alcohol to lead a fulfilling life.

In his documentary series, “Angry Young Men,” Akhtar also mentioned his feelings of guilt towards Honey Irani. He said that he feels she is the one person he has wronged in his life. He admitted that had he been more understanding and responsible, their marriage might have turned out differently.
