Angelina Jolie Overcomes Singing Criticism
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie revealed that an ex-partner once criticized her singing, leading her to doubt her abilities. She explained, “I had somebody in my life who was not kind to me about singing. It was a relationship I was in. And so I just assumed I couldn’t really sing.”
Despite having attended theater school, Angelina Jolie was surprised by how much the negative comments affected her. She admitted that she “adapted” to the criticism and needed to work through these doubts before she felt comfortable singing again.
During the filming of Maria, Jolie was initially very “shy” and “nervous” about singing. She practiced extensively and mentioned feeling “giddy” as she pushed beyond her comfort zone. Jolie also noted that while her sons Maddox and Pax were on set, the opera singing required a lot of loud, confident performances.
The film, which premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, tells the dramatic life story of Maria Callas and has received high praise. Jolie’s performance earned her an eight-minute standing ovation at the event. The movie also features Alba Rohrwacher, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and several other actors.
