Rossif Sutherland, the talented actor and son of the legendary Donald Sutherland, is set to honor his late father’s legacy in a deeply personal way. His upcoming series, Murder in a Small Town, will be dedicated to Donald Sutherland, fulfilling a dream that the elder Sutherland had cherished for decades.
About Rossif Sutherland
Rossif Sutherland has gone to play the lead detective role in Murder in a Small Town, Fox new detective drama. It is based on the Karl Alberg mystery novel series written by Canadian author L. R. Wright. What makes this project even more special is that it was a labor of love of Rossif’s father, the actor Donald Sutherland. In fact, their irreverent and wickedly funny portrayals of the sin that is sex involve explicit depictions of sexual relations that would have made the movie impossible to produce when Donald first began pursuing this dream over 30 years ago.

A Lifelong Dream
That’s the history of this dedication – a true one. What Rossif did not know at the time he got the role of a young Alberg was that his father had been trying to get the Alberg book series adapted to the big screen for over twenty years. Finally, it was only when he excitedly told it to Donald that he discovered that his father had had a long and patient search to try and get the story filmed. Donald had developed an interest in the character of George, the main suspect of the first book and was fully employed to ensure that this fictional character was portrayed on the large screen.
Donald Sutherland was first attracted to the project when he got the script and later the books. He liked the show so much that he befriended producer Nick Orchard and writer Ian Weir and together attempted to realize the story on the big screen. However, the project was never again carried on to completion as the above mentioned groups strived to do.
A Dedication Born Out of Love
Originally George was to be played by Donald Sutherland before his death on 20th June 2024, at the age of 88. However, he was unable to perform this role anymore due to his ailing condition hence the role was changed and has since been conceded to James Cromwell. But Rossif wanted to pay tribute to his father and to his strong feelings about the work, so he suggested dedicating the series to Donald.
Rossif shared with Deadline that many people were asking how they could honor his father. Given Donald’s intimate relationship with the birth of this project, Rossif felt that dedicating the series to him was the most fitting tribute.
