The much-awaited film Udaipur Files, starring Vijay Raaz, has finally hit theatres across India after getting the green light from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Udaipur Files is based on the real-life 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur. He was killed after allegedly posting support on social media for politician Nupur Sharma, whose remarks had sparked a nationwide controversy. The accused also released a video claiming the murder was revenge for the post.

Kanhaiya Lal’s son, Yash Sahu, expressed that the film tells the true story of his father’s murder, which he says was part of a terrorist conspiracy linked to Pakistan. He believes the movie will make people aware of such incidents and hopes it will help in their ongoing fight for justice. Yash also shared his disappointment that, even after three years, the criminals have not yet been punished.

The film’s release journey was difficult. It was originally scheduled for July 11, 2025, but a Delhi High Court order stopped its release just a day earlier. Later, the matter went to the Supreme Court, which ruled that since the CBFC had cleared the movie, it should be allowed to release. The final decision was then left to the Central Government, which approved it.

Kanhaiya Lal’s wife, Jasoda Sahu, revealed that she wrote directly to the Prime Minister when the film was blocked. She said the movie reflects her family’s pain and that every Indian should see it to understand their struggle.

For the makers and the family, the release of Udaipur Files is not just about cinema it’s about telling a story they believe the whole country should know. The film mixes real events with dramatization, aiming to show the tragedy, its political and social impact, and the emotional toll on the victim’s family.

Now that the movie is finally in theatres, all eyes will be on public response and whether it strengthens the family’s call for justice.
