Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey once had the chance to play Jack Dawson in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. However, according to the late producer Jon Landau’s memoir The Bigger Picture, McConaughey lost the role because he refused to change his Southern accent during the audition.

Landau wrote that Matthew McConaughey was called in to read a scene with actress Kate Winslet, who was already shortlisted for the role of Rose. The team wanted to see not just how they looked together on screen, but also their chemistry. Winslet liked McConaughey’s charm and presence, but he performed the scene using his Texas drawl.

After the scene, director James Cameron suggested they try it again in a different way, implying a change of accent. McConaughey reportedly replied, “No. That was pretty good. Thanks.” Landau noted that this ended McConaughey’s chances of getting the part.
Following this, Leonardo DiCaprio was brought in. He went on to play Jack Dawson, a role that turned him into a global star. Before Titanic, DiCaprio had already gained recognition in films like What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Romeo + Juliet.

Matthew McConaughey later shared in a 2021 interview that he truly believed he had secured the part after his audition with Winslet. He recalled that the crew seemed pleased, even giving him hugs as he left. Winslet also remembered the audition as “fantastic” but admitted the film would have felt very different without DiCaprio as Jack.
Although McConaughey missed out on one of the most iconic films of the 1990s, his career did not suffer. He went on to win an Academy Award for Dallas Buyers Club, earn praise for True Detective, and star in hits like Interstellar. Interestingly, McConaughey and DiCaprio eventually worked together in The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013.
The story shows how even small choices, like keeping an accent, can shape a career. While Titanic became a defining moment for DiCaprio, McConaughey still built a highly successful and respected career in Hollywood.
