Valeria Marquez was a 23-year-old model and social media influencer from Mexico. She was well known for sharing beauty and makeup videos on TikTok and Instagram. On the day of the incident, Valeria was livestreaming from her beauty salon in Jalisco, Mexico, when she was suddenly shot and killed. The attacker came on a motorcycle and opened fire while she was speaking to someone, believed to be a delivery person. She was shot once in the chest and twice in the head. Although paramedics arrived quickly, she died at the scene.

Valeria’s death was captured live on video and shocked her many followers. The video showed her smiling and holding a stuffed toy before glancing out the window. She seemed nervous and mentioned that someone had previously come to the salon to deliver an expensive gift when she was not there. Just before the attack, she responded to someone calling her name and muted her livestream. Seconds later, she was shot.

Mexican authorities are now treating the case as a possible femicide. Femicide refers to the killing of a woman because of her gender, and sadly, this is a serious issue in Mexico. According to the UN, Mexico has one of the highest femicide rates in Latin America.
Local reports have suggested that a man named Ricardo Ruiz Velazco, possibly linked to a powerful drug cartel, may be connected to Valeria’s killing. It is believed that he was in a relationship with her and was angry about gifts she received from other people. However, police have not confirmed these details and investigations are ongoing. The gunman has not yet been caught.
