This week, many popular Pakistani actors saw their Instagram accounts become inaccessible in India. Among those affected were Hania Aamir, known for her roles in hit dramas like Mere Humsafar, and Mahira Khan, who made her Bollywood debut alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Raees (2017). This move comes in the wake of a brutal attack on tourists in Pahalgam, a scenic valley in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people.

The attack took place last Tuesday, when gunmen separated men from women and asked about their religion before opening fire at close range. All but one of the victims were Indian nationals; one was from Nepal. India’s government immediately blamed militant groups based in Pakistan for the violence. In response, India also banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels accused of spreading content that could disturb communal harmony.

India did not stop at social media bans. The government suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a key agreement on sharing river water with Pakistan, and closed the Attari land border crossing, the only operational land route between the two countries. Diplomatic ties were downgraded, and Pakistan quickly retaliated by shutting its airspace to Indian flights and suspending trade, even through third countries.
This exchange of measures has raised fears of further escalation. Pakistan condemned India’s suspension of the water treaty, calling any attempt to halt the flow of rivers an “act of war.” Both nations remain locked in a tense standoff, with normal channels of dialogue and cooperation severely disrupted.
