Marvel fans are excited as a new trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been released. One big surprise in the trailer is the casting of Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer. This version of the story brings a new twist—Silver Surfer is not the usual male character but a woman. This change is making many fans curious and interested in what Marvel has planned.
Who is Julia Garner’s Shalla-Bal?
In the original comic books, Silver Surfer is known as Norrin Radd. He is from a peaceful planet called Zenn-La. When a powerful being named Galactus comes to destroy his world, Radd offers to serve him in exchange for saving his people. Galactus agrees, and Norrin Radd becomes the Silver Surfer, a silver-skinned being with cosmic powers who finds planets for Galactus to consume. He leaves behind his love, Shalla-Bal, on Zenn-La.

However, in the upcoming movie, Julia Garner is not playing Norrin Radd. She is playing Shalla-Bal, the woman Norrin Radd loved. This time, the story changes, and Shalla-Bal becomes the Silver Surfer instead. She takes the role of Galactus’s servant to save her world, just like Norrin did in the original comics.
This is not the first time Marvel has changed the gender of a character. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), there have been several creative changes to characters, but this is one of the most important ones. It shows Marvel’s interest in telling stories from new points of view. It also gives a chance for a strong female character to take the spotlight in a major superhero story.
There is also a version of the Marvel universe, called Earth X, where both Norrin Radd and Shalla-Bal become Silver Surfers. They share the cosmic power and serve Galactus together. In that storyline, Galactus is actually a future version of Franklin Richards, the son of Fantastic Four members Reed Richards and Sue Storm. This adds a deeper connection to the Fantastic Four team and their larger universe.
