The writer of the film Laapataa Ladies, Biplab Goswami, has spoken out against plagiarism claims made about the movie. Some people on the internet said that the movie copied ideas from a 2019 Arabic film called Burqa City. But Goswami strongly denied all such allegations. He said that the story, dialogues, and characters of Laapataa Ladies are fully original and created by him over many years.
Laapataa Ladies Writer Denies Plagiarism Claims
He explained that the idea for the film came to him long ago. In fact, he had registered the story’s synopsis under the title Two Brides with the Screenwriters Association on July 3, 2014. Later, in 2018, he registered the full script. Goswami also mentioned that he included many important scenes in the original version, including the one where a groom brings home the wrong bride because her face was covered with a veil. This moment becomes a key turning point in the film.
He also talked about another funny scene that was written long ago. In that scene, the groom goes to the police with a photo of his bride, but her face is fully covered, which confuses everyone. He said such scenes were created from his own imagination and were not copied from anywhere.

Goswami added that using mistaken identity in stories is a very old storytelling style. Writers like William Shakespeare, Rabindranath Tagore, and Alexandre Dumas have also used similar ideas. But he made sure to say that Laapataa Ladies is different and has its own setting, characters, and unique story. He said his film talks about social issues like gender inequality and rural power, and everything in it came from deep research and honest effort.
He also said that his full script was submitted in a popular competition in 2018, where it won the runner-up award. All this, according to him, is proof that the story was his own work. He even shared documents to support his claims.
Director Kiran Rao, who directed the film, showed her full support for Goswami. She reposted his statement on her social media to stand with him.
The film Laapataa Ladies was released in cinemas on March 1, 2024, and stars Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, and Ravi Kishan. It has received praise for its storytelling and performances. Despite the controversy, both the writer and director remain confident that the movie is an original creation.
