Emergency is a political drama that explores one of the most controversial periods in Indian history—the Emergency of 1975. Kangana Ranaut, who has directed and produced the film, also plays the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The movie delves into the significant political events of that time and their impact on the nation.

The film features a powerful cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik. With a runtime of 146 minutes, Emergency was made with a budget of ₹60 crore.

Initially, Emergency was supposed to be released on September 6, 2024, but due to delays in certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), it was postponed. After several modifications and cuts, the movie was finally given a U/A certificate and hit theatres on January 17, 2025. However, despite the hype and Kangana’s strong fan following, the film struggled at the box office.

Many critics appreciated the movie for its historical significance and Kangana’s performance, but some felt that the documentary-style storytelling and rushed conclusion reduced its overall impact. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh gave it a 3.5-star rating, mentioning that the movie had strong dramatic moments but could have been executed better.

For those who missed it in theatres, Emergency now offers a great opportunity to watch it from the comfort of their homes. Kangana herself took to Instagram to announce the OTT release, calling it her second directorial project after Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Netflix also promoted the film, describing it as “the gripping story of power and peril.”
