Apple TV+’s Severance continues to be the hottest new series out there, weaving a mind-bending exploration of work-life balance (or lack thereof). Fans are going crazy with speculation, especially over mysterious “goat” references, in episode 3, titled “Our Best and Worst Goat Theories.”.
Severance: Episode 3 Review
The episode puts viewers deeper in the unsettling world of Lumon Industries, an organization where its employees undergo severance procedures splitting their memories to work and their personal lives. Mark Scout (played by Adam Scott), is the protagonist for the show outside of Lumon, but it is within those sterile walls and offices that the “innie” self of his, along with his coworkers, is tasked to do mysterious data refinement that does not seem to make sense at all.

References to a “goat” abound in the episode. It’s almost as if a whole new puzzle is being stacked on top of the already cryptic story: In one frame, Mark uncovers a hidden drawing of a goat amongst other seemingly meaningless data. Later on, a coded message brought back by another fellow “innie” speaks of “following the goat.” All of these apparently benign details have kindled a raging fire of fans’ theories.
One popular theory suggests that the goat represents a path to freedom for the severed employees. Perhaps following the goat metaphorically leads them to uncover the truth about Lumon’s sinister purpose. Another theory delves deeper into Lumon’s corporate culture, suggesting the goat symbolizes a form of internal rebellion or a hidden message within the company.
A Cliffhanger Ending Fuels Speculation:
The final scene of the episode is a cliffhanger that leaves viewers with a desire for answers. Mark’s “innie” self finds a secret passageway in Lumon headquarters, furthering speculation about the goat’s relationship to an escape route or other hidden truths.
With only a few episodes left in the first season, Severance has become a must-watch for those who enjoy mind-bending sci-fi and psychological thrillers. The show’s exploration of identity, free will, and corporate control, along with its enigmatic use of symbolism like the “goat,” has guaranteed that audiences will be glued to their screens until the very end.
