Ethan Hawke recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of the beloved romantic drama Before Sunrise, a film that marked the beginning of the iconic Before Trilogy. The actor fondly remembered the premiere of the movie at the Sundance Film Festival in 1995, where the film was introduced by none other than Sundance founder, Robert Redford.
Ethan Hawke Celebrates Before Sunrise Anniversary
Hawke, who starred as Jesse, an American traveler, shared a nostalgic Instagram post on January 27, 2025, looking back at that memorable night. He uploaded three images featuring his co-star Julie Delpy and director Richard Linklater, along with the caption, “This time 30 years ago our movie Before Sunrise debuted at Sundance. Redford himself introduced it. Great night.”
The film introduced Jesse and Céline, played by Delpy, who meet by chance in Vienna and share a brief but meaningful connection. Before Sunrise was the start of a trilogy, followed by Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013), which followed the characters at different points in their lives.
Hawke’s post triggered many fans and celebrities to reflect on the trilogy’s legacy. Actor Topher Grace even called it “the best trilogy of all time.” The film series is known for its deep, realistic dialogue and emotional storytelling, making it a favorite among cinephiles.

Despite occasional discussions between Hawke, Delpy, and Linklater about continuing the trilogy, the team agreed in 2021 that they hadn’t come up with a compelling idea for a fourth film. Delpy explained that the three of them were in agreement: they would only continue the story if it met the high artistic standards of the previous films.
For now, fans can revisit Before Sunrise, which is available for streaming on Netflix, to relive the magic of Jesse and Céline’s first meeting and their unforgettable conversations about life, love, and everything in between.
This reflection on the film’s anniversary brings fans a chance to celebrate the movie’s impact and remember the timeless connection between Jesse and Céline.
