Why Josh Radnor’s Ted Mosby Didn’t Appear in How I Met Your Father Spinoff

Fans of How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) were excited when its spinoff, How I Met Your Father, was announced. Many beloved characters from the original series made cameo appearances, including Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders). However, one key character was missing—Ted Mosby, played by Josh Radnor. Recently, the show’s co-creator, Craig Thomas, revealed the reason behind his absence.

Why Ted Mosby Was Missing

According to People magazine, Craig Thomas explained that he and Carter Bays, the original creators of HIMYM, were not actively involved in the spinoff. He stated that for Radnor to appear in the show, there needed to be a strong and meaningful reason. Unfortunately, that never materialized.

Thomas said, “We weren’t really involved. Put it this way, it would’ve had to be a really good idea for me to come to Josh to say, ‘Can you be in this show?’ It didn’t end up going that way, so it’s okay.”

Despite Ted’s absence, several other cast members returned to How I Met Your Father.

  • Cobie Smulders reprised her role as Robin Scherbatsky.
  • Neil Patrick Harris made an appearance as Barney Stinson.
  • Jason Segel, who played Marshall Eriksen, had expressed interest in appearing.
  • Alyson Hannigan (Lily Aldrin) did not appear, stating that she wasn’t ready to watch the spinoff, even though her husband, Alexis Denisof, had a guest role.

Although Josh Radnor didn’t return as Ted Mosby, he and Craig Thomas are working together on a new project. Thomas teased that they would announce it in the spring. While he did not share many details, he expressed excitement about collaborating with Radnor again.
