Djimon Hounsou Shares Struggles of Being Underpaid and Facing Racism in Hollywood Industry

Hollywood actor Djimon Hounsou recently shared his experiences of facing challenges in the entertainment industry as a person of color. Despite his impressive career, which includes two Academy Award nominations and roles in many hit films, Hounsou admitted that his journey has not been easy.

Djimon Hounsou Discusses Hollywood Struggles

In an interview on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers, Hounsou revealed that he still struggles to make a decent living, even after being in the industry for over two decades. He said, “I’m still struggling to make a living” and explained that he feels underpaid for his work.

The actor also talked about feeling overlooked by the Academy Awards for his role in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad (1997). Though he received a Golden Globe nomination for the role, Hounsou believes he was not given the respect he deserved. He stated that people thought of him as someone who had just “come off the boat and the streets.”

Hounsou also discussed the lack of diversity in Hollywood. He expressed that although there has been some progress, systemic racism and inequality in the industry remain significant issues. “This idea of diversity still has a long way to go,” he said.

Hounsou’s words highlight the ongoing challenges many actors of color face in Hollywood, even those with significant talent and success.
