Kristin Chenoweth Defends Wicked Movie Against Allegations From Right-Wing Group

The 2024 movie adaptation of the hit Kristin Chenoweth Broadway musical Wicked has become a target of controversy. A conservative group called One Million Moms accused the film of promoting an “LGBTQ agenda” and “pushing wokeness,” urging families to boycott it.

Kristin Chenoweth Defends Wicked

According to reports, the group claimed Wicked features witchcraft, sorcery, and themes they consider inappropriate for children. They specifically criticized the portrayal of “cross-dressing” and romantic connections between male characters, which they alleged sent a negative message.

Actress Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the role of Glinda in the stage version of Wicked, strongly defended the movie. She commented on social media, calling the allegations “silliness spewed out of hate.” Kristin emphasized that Wicked is simply a form of entertainment and praised its artistry.

Chenoweth also praised the new adaptation starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Encouraging fans to watch the film, she described it as a celebration of “girl power” and said it’s perfect for viewers looking for an inspiring and empowering story.

The debate around Wicked has also reignited conversations about its subtle LGBTQ themes. In an interview with Gay Times, Ariana Grande hinted that her character Glinda might have a “closeted side.” Kristin Chenoweth supported this interpretation, saying she had similar thoughts when playing Glinda in the stage version.

The original Wicked story, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, explores themes of friendship, identity, and acceptance. In the book, Glinda and Elphaba share a strong connection that includes a brief kiss, making their bond central to the narrative.

Despite the criticism, Wicked has been praised by audiences and critics for its powerful message and stellar performances. The movie is a fresh take on the beloved musical, blending stunning visuals, heartfelt storytelling, and outstanding music.

As Kristin Chenoweth said, Wicked is all about celebrating friendship and individuality, making it a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. The film is now playing in theaters worldwide.
