Rupert Grint, famous for playing Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series, has been ordered to pay £1.8 million ($2.3 million) in taxes. This ruling comes from a U.K. court, which decided that his earnings from the Harry Potter franchise are considered taxable income, not capital assets.
Rupert Grint Hit With $2.3M Tax
The tax issue started in 2019 when Rupert Grint earnings from the Harry Potter films were reviewed by HMRC (His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs). Grint had set up a company, Clay 10 Limited, in 2011. He sold his rights to residual earnings from the Harry Potter films to this company, which reported the income as capital assets to reduce taxes.
HMRC argued that this strategy was similar to a tax loophole used by The Beatles in the 1960s, where earnings were reclassified to avoid high taxes. The court disagreed and ruled that Grint’s residuals, which mainly come from DVD and TV sales, should be taxed as income.
Rupert Grint legal team argued that he was not heavily involved in managing his finances and trusted his father and accountants to handle them. The judge acknowledged this but still sided with HMRC.

This isn’t the first time Grint’s taxes have come under scrutiny. In 2019, HMRC flagged Grint for incorrectly classifying £4.5 million in residuals as capital assets. Although Grint’s team appealed that decision, the recent ruling has left him with a large tax bill.
Rupert Grint starred in the Harry Potter films from 2001, earning approximately £27 million during his time in the franchise. While his co-stars, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have pursued bigger roles, Grint has taken a quieter career path. Recently, he appeared in Knock at the Cabin and the series Servant.
Despite this tax issue, Grint continues to be a well-known figure thanks to his role in Harry Potter.
