The new film adaptation of Wicked has made quite an impact, and the original author, Gregory Maguire, has shared his thoughts. The 2024 movie, based on Maguire’s 1995 book, has received praise from the author himself, who says the film is “far better than it has any right to be.”

Maguire spoke about how different the film is from his book, admitting, “I hardly recognize it as my book anymore.” Despite this, he’s thrilled with the result and especially with Cynthia Erivo’s performance as Elphaba, the misunderstood green-skinned witch. He called Erivo’s portrayal “sharp, opinionated, and powerful,” while also highlighting the actress’s ability to show the character’s more vulnerable side.

The movie, released on November 22, stars Ariana Grande as Glinda, Erivo as Elphaba, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero. It focuses on the growing friendship between Elphaba and Glinda as they navigate life at Shiz University in the Land of Oz. The musical is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz and explores themes of friendship, power, and identity.

Erivo and Grande formed a close bond during filming, and Erivo has spoken warmly about her relationship with Grande, saying they “have a really great relationship” that continues to grow.

Fans of the musical have been excited about the film, and many are singing along to the iconic songs in theaters. However, some moviegoers have expressed frustration with others singing during the film, sparking a debate on social media.

Despite the mixed reactions, Wicked has been a major success, and it looks like the movie adaptation has won the approval of both fans and the original author alike. The film is currently playing in theaters.
