Sonakshi Sinha, Bollywood’s beloved actress, had an unexpected journey to stardom with her debut film Dabangg. In a recent interview on Kareena Kapoor’s podcast What Women Want, Sonakshi shared how landing the role in the film felt like an “arranged marriage.”
Sonakshi Sinha Compares Dabangg Casting
In 2010, Sonakshi Sinha made her Bollywood debut opposite Salman Khan in Dabangg. The film was a massive success and made her a household name. However, she admitted that the casting process was surprising and out of the blue. It all started when Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan noticed her at Amrita Arora’s wedding after she had lost a lot of weight. They felt she would be perfect for the role of Rajjo, the strong-willed woman in the movie.

At first, Sonakshi didn’t take their offer seriously, but soon after, Salman and Arbaaz visited her home to narrate the script. Things happened so quickly that before she knew it, she was on the sets of Dabangg, working with Salman Khan. She compared the whole experience to an arranged marriage—something that came unexpectedly but worked out perfectly.
Despite the surprise nature of her casting, once Sonakshi started working on the film, she realized acting was what she truly wanted to do. She said, “It felt like an arranged marriage, but once I reached the set, I realized I wanted to do this, and I’ve been doing it ever since.”
At the time of her debut, Sonakshi was studying fashion design and had just lost weight after being overweight as a teenager. She had no prior experience in acting and had never even considered it as a career option. Everything about Dabangg happened so fast, and Sonakshi transitioned into acting with ease, as if it were her natural calling.
The film, directed by Abhinav Kashyap, became a massive hit, and Sonakshi’s portrayal of Rajjo became iconic. Dabangg not only launched her career but also led to two successful sequels, Dabangg 2 (2012) and Dabangg 3 (2019).
