Gufi fondly described Ratan Tata as a “thorough gentleman,” expressing pride in their friendship. He recalled that Ratan was the only person who invited him into his room for conversations, showcasing their bond. Ratan Tata was known for his beautiful silver convertible car, which was quite a novelty at that time, especially since it had a high-fidelity radio.
One touching story Gufi shared was about how Ratan Tata lent him his car to take his mother out when she visited. Gufi remembered, “Ratan came, quietly handed me the keys to his Plymouth and said, ‘Take your mother for a ride.’” This gesture illustrated Ratan’s kindness and willingness to help a friend.
Gufi also recounted a chance encounter with Ratan Tata years later in Bandra, where Ratan stopped to offer him a ride. Gufi, however, declined, noting that he was crossing the road and had his own car parked nearby.
Ratan Tata passed away after battling health issues and was honored at the NCPA in Mumbai, where many came to pay their last respects. Gufi Paintal’s memories serve as a reminder of the personal side of this remarkable individual, reflecting the warmth and friendship he shared with those around him.
