In a recent column, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment over Gautam Gambhir receiving credit for India’s victory in the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh. He emphasized that the credit for India’s fearless approach belongs to captain Rohit Sharma. According to Gavaskar, Rohit has been guiding the team with an aggressive playing style for a few years, and not newly appointed coach Gambhir, who joined only recently.
Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Gambhir’s Credit
Sunil Gavaskar strongly disagreed with attributing the team’s success to Gambhir, calling it an example of “foot-licking of the highest quality.” He added that Gambhir never played with the same aggression as England’s coach Brendon McCullum, who was known for his bold style.

The match in Kanpur was heading for a draw after rain washed out two-and-a-half days of play. However, India came out with a renewed intensity, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s bold decisions and the points available in the World Test Championship (WTC). Gavaskar applauded the International Cricket Cou ncil (ICC) for creating the WTC, which has made Test matches more competitive.
During the match, India’s bowlers dismissed Bangladesh for 233 runs after starting the day at 107/3. In their first innings, India scored quickly, setting multiple records for the fastest team scores at 50, 100, and 200 runs. Rohit Sharma’s attacking 23 off 11 balls set the tone for the innings.
India bowled out Bangladesh for 146 in the second innings, securing a convincing win with one session remaining. The victory showcased India’s aggressive approach, which Gavaskar believes should be credited to Rohit Sharma, not Gambhir.
