Andy Samberg Shares Thoughts on The Office's Parody of The Lonely Island Skit

Andy Samberg recently shared his thoughts on The Office’s parody of his famous Saturday Night Live skit with The Lonely Island. In a recent podcast appearance, Samberg admitted he felt mixed emotions about the parody, which is called “Lazy Scranton.” He wondered if The Office was making fun of them or just showing how people reacted to their skit.

Samberg was confused but decided to reach out to Mike Schur, one of the creators of The Office. Schur was also a writer for SNL and a friend of Samberg. After talking to him, Samberg realized that the parody was meant in a friendly way and that Schur appreciated what they were doing.

He explained, “I very distinctly remember it, and I remember having to go through the feelings of, like, ‘Are they making fun of it? Or are they making fun of people doing their version of it?'” Eventually, he understood that Schur liked their work and was not trying to mock them.

The original SNL skit, titled “Lazy Sundays,” was released in 2005. In it, Samberg and Chris Parnell rapped about their weekend activities, like eating cupcakes. The Office’s version features characters Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell) and Dwight Schrute (played by Rainn Wilson) rapping about local parks and libraries.

Seth Meyers, who was also on the podcast, suggested that “Lazy Scranton” wasn’t meant to mock. He believed it was just something that would be expected from Michael Scott’s character.

Currently, Andy Samberg is starring in a new war film called Lee. In the movie, he plays a photojournalist alongside Kate Winslet, who is an Oscar-winning actress. The film tells the story of a model who became a photographer during World War II. Lee is now playing in theaters, while all nine seasons of The Office can be streamed on Peacock.
