Actor Eric Roberts has shared personal insights about raising his daughter, Emma Roberts, in his new memoir, Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far. In the book, Roberts opens up about his struggles as a father, including how his relationship with Emma’s mother, Kelly Cunningham, was impacted.
Eric Roberts on Parenting Struggles
Roberts reveals that he left Cunningham when Emma was just seven months old. He wrote, “I had abandoned Kelly when Emma was just seven months old.” Despite their challenges, both parents had wanted to raise a child. Roberts expressed his excitement about becoming a father, stating that the pregnancy and seeing Emma for the first time were thrilling moments in his life.

However, the actor admits that fatherhood was not easy for him. While he loved Emma deeply, he struggled with the responsibilities of being a parent. “I loved my little daughter with the strength of Hercules, despite my own weaknesses,” he wrote, acknowledging that he couldn’t fully handle being a father.
Eric Roberts also touched on how his drug addiction affected his ability to be present as a parent. He confessed that he was heavily influenced by drugs at the time of Emma’s birth, which made it difficult for him to be there for her. He said losing his daughter was one of the biggest consequences of his addiction.
The memoir also clears up rumors about a custody battle involving Emma. Roberts explained that there was never a fight over custody, despite rumors that his sister, Julia Roberts, had taken Cunningham’s side. Roberts clarified, “I never saw myself as someone who deserved to have physical custody of Emma.”
