Karnataka on High Alert After Nipah Virus Death in Kerala, 41 Contacts Quarantined

Karnataka’s Health Department has issued a high alert after the tragic death of a Bengaluru student from the Nipah virus in Kerala. As a precaution, 41 individuals who had close contact with the student are now under quarantine.

Nipah Virus Alert in Karnataka

The student, a 24-year-old postgraduate psychology student originally from Thiruvali village in Malappuram, Kerala, had returned home on August 25 following an injury. On September 5, he developed a fever and sought treatment at a local clinic. His condition worsened, leading to severe symptoms of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES). Sadly, he passed away on September 8 after being admitted to a medical college hospital.

Health officials have confirmed that 32 people, including students and staff from his institution, attended his funeral, with three of them visiting him while he was hospitalized. To date, no cases of Nipah have been reported in Karnataka, and authorities are taking strict measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

The state’s health department has stated that one primary contact is showing mild symptoms but is stable and being closely monitored. The other primary and secondary contacts are currently asymptomatic. Surveillance efforts are ongoing, with the Rapid Response Team (RRT) and other health officials actively monitoring the situation. All contacts have been advised to remain in quarantine and to report any symptoms immediately.

The Karnataka Health Department reassured the public, confirming that there are no active cases of Nipah in the state at present. Authorities are continuing their efforts to prevent the virus from spreading and have urged the public not to panic.

Education and awareness campaigns about the Nipah virus are also being conducted to ensure people remain informed and vigilant during this time.
