The upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) has stirred controversy with the casting of Anna Delvey, a convicted con artist also known as Anna Sorkin. DWTS Defends Anna Delvey
Anna Delvey became famous for pretending to be a wealthy German heiress while defrauding banks, hotels, and individuals. She was convicted in 2019 for grand larceny and theft of services. After serving time, Anna Delvey was released early in February 2021 for good behavior but was later detained by ICE for visa issues. She has been under house arrest in New York City while fighting deportation. Special permission was granted for her to join DWTS, provided she wears an ankle monitor during the competition.
Conrad Green defended Anna Delvey inclusion, pointing out that DWTS has previously featured contestants with criminal pasts. He stressed that Delvey has served her sentence and deserves a chance to return to public life. Green also mentioned that Delvey’s fashion background could add a unique element to the show. “Anna is fascinating to a lot of people… There’s an inherent curiosity about her,” Green said.
The casting choice has faced criticism from fans and commentators. On The View, Whoopi Goldberg questioned why ICE allowed Delvey to participate while other immigration cases seem to have different outcomes. Alyssa Farah Griffin also expressed concerns, stating that while redemption is important, Delvey’s sincerity is still in question.
Despite the criticism, Green stands by his decision, believing that Delvey’s story and legal history make her a valid and intriguing part of the season. As Delvey prepares to compete, viewers will be watching to see how she performs and navigates her path to redemption on the dance floor.
