Harvey Weinstein's Lawyers Seek Hospitalization Ahead of Retrial

Harvey Weinstein‘s legal team is asking for him to stay in the hospital due to worsening health, just months before his retrial. The former movie producer was recently moved from Rikers Island to Bellevue Hospital in New York after experiencing heart problems. He underwent emergency heart surgery, known as pericardiocentesis, to remove fluid around his heart and lungs.

Weinstein’s lawyer, Curtis Rothfeld, and Arthur Aidala, whose health has deteriorated that they claim makes it hard for him to attend court sessions including the one that is set for September 12. They want him to stay in the hospital until his second trial in November next year, for rape and sexual assault.

Weinstein’s health has been a concern for a few years now, and his defense said that he still requires treatment. They have also appreciated the New York City Department of Correction as well as Rikers Island for its efficiency in transferring him to the hospital.

To encourage the retrial, Weinstein’s conviction in 2020 was overturned by the New York court of appeals. The court also found errors in the reception of evidence from three other women not among the official complainants. The re-trial is set to commence on November the 12th, 2024, in regards to which Weinstein’s health may not permit him to fully take part in.

It’s considered as the part of #MeToo movement, the result of the retrial is expected. There is also potential for the accusations to increase in number since the investigation into Weinstein’s behavior goes on.
