Ortega expressed that while she supports the rise of female leads, she prefers creating fresh, original characters instead of reimagining existing male roles. For instance, when asked if she would consider playing a gender-flipped version of Edward Scissorhands, Ortega made it clear that she would rather see new stories featuring strong female protagonists.
“I love that there are more female leads now,” Ortega said. “But I want to see new, unique characters, not just ‘Jamie Bond’ or similar spin-offs. We need to create more original roles for women.”
This perspective adds to the ongoing conversation about gender representation in Hollywood. While some see gender-flipped characters as a step toward diversity, Ortega believes that creating entirely new female characters is more impactful. This view is shared by others in the industry, including Barbara Broccoli, the long-time producer of the James Bond films, who has stated that she prefers to create new female characters rather than changing established ones.
Daniel Craig, who recently stepped down as James Bond, also supports the idea of creating better roles for women and actors of color rather than simply casting them in male roles. He suggested that there should be new, strong parts for women, rather than altering existing male characters.
