In the TV interview, Hori said that he learnt how to adapt his body and the brain to work without having to sleep at all. He opines that quality sleep is much more effective than the duration that one would spend in sleep as far as productivity is concerned. For example, he says that one should engage in physical activity or take coffee for one hour to a meal in order to fight fatigue.
Even the way Hori sleeps has become newsworthy, receiving coverage by Yomiuri TV in a reality show. He had insomnia and the show featured him getting almost no sleep trying to ensure that he exercised and worked well.
In 2016, Hori established the Japan Short Sleepers Training Association through which he educates other people on how to manage short sleep patterns like his. Up to date he has taken through the ultra-short sleepers training over 2100 people.
This is not the only such case. In Vietnam, 80-years old Thai Ngoc says he has slept in over 60-years because of a fever that he contracted in 1962. He has continued to suffer from insomnia despite this he has undergone various treatments.
Called into question through Hori’s account, the importance of sleep when the human body is exposed to conditions and adversities hitherto briefly discussed in the course of this project.
