The controversy began after the series was released and viewers noticed that the names of the hijackers were changed. In the actual hijacking, the terrorists were Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Mistri Zahoor Ibrahim, and Shakir. However, the series uses names like ‘Shankar,’ ‘Bhola,’ and titles like ‘Chief,’ ‘Doctor,’ and ‘Burger’ instead.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s decision to summon Netflix India’s content head follows a social media outcry. Many users have criticized the show for distorting historical facts and have called for a boycott of the series using hashtags like #IC814, #BoycottNetflix, and #BoycottBollywood. Critics argue that the changes are misleading and accuse the creators, including Anubhav Sinha, of propaganda.
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, directed by Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Srivastava, is based on the book Flight Into Fear: The Captain’s Story by Devi Sharan and journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury. The series dramatizes the hijacking of the flight on December 24, 1999, which involved a complex rescue operation that saw the Indian government agree to release three terrorists from prison to secure the hostages’ freedom.
