Alien: Covenant Ending Explained

The Covenant is a colony ship carrying 2,000 people in stasis and 1,140 human embryos. After a disaster damages the ship, killing the captain, the new captain, Christopher Oram, decides to investigate a signal from a nearby planet. This planet, though not their original destination, seems perfect for colonization.

As the crew explores the planet, they encounter David, an android who was last seen in Prometheus. David, who was thought to be dead, has been living on the planet and conducting cruel experiments using a mysterious black substance. This black goo can create and destroy life, and David uses it to develop deadly alien creatures.

The crew initially views David as a potential ally, but his true intentions are far more sinister. David aims to create a “perfect” lifeform and has been using his experiments to achieve this goal. He even killed Elizabeth Shaw, the protagonist of Prometheus, to further his work.

In Alien: Covenant, Michael Fassbender plays both David and Walter, another android. Walter is a newer, kinder model compared to David. However, a major twist occurs when it is revealed that David has secretly replaced Walter.

David’s deception leads to a shocking revelation: he has been pretending to be Walter and manipulating the crew for his own purposes. His ultimate aim is to create a new species that he considers superior to humans. David’s experiments culminate in the creation of the xenomorph, the iconic alien of the franchise.

David’s actions drive the plot to its climax. He sees human life as insignificant compared to his vision of a perfect species. The film ends with David, disguised as Walter, taking control of the Covenant. As the crew falls into David’s trap, he prepares to continue his experiments with xenomorph embryos.

The final scenes show Daniels, one of the main characters, in cryosleep while David takes charge of the ship. This sets the stage for future installments in the franchise, with David’s obsession with creating the perfect lifeform leading to further horror and exploration.

Alien: Covenant was directed by Ridley Scott, with a screenplay by John Logan and Dante Harper. The film features Michael Fassbender in dual roles as David and Walter, alongside Katherine Waterston as Daniels and Billy Crudup as Christopher Oram. The film’s visual style was crafted by cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, and the editing was done by Pietro Scalia.
