Glenn Close, a renowned actress with eight Oscar nominations, has taken on a new and challenging role in the Netflix horror film The Deliverance. Known for her dedication to diverse and complex characters, Close found this role particularly intriguing. She was drawn to the challenge of portraying a character she had never played before.

A Unique Character Glenn Close

In The Deliverance,Glenn Close portrays the character of Alberta, a White woman who has lived in a Black neighborhood her whole life and has only ever had a boyfriend of Black origin. This character is unusual and Close admitted she had ‘no idea’ how to go about it at first. Alberta has faced profound suffering; she is a survivor of abuse, and she abuses people too. Even as she continues with her chemo treatments Alberta’s demeanor remains cheerful symbolized by the wigs and her playfulness with the nursing staff.

Director’s Vision

It was ,Glenn Close director Lee Daniels who offered her the part of Alberta, and ,Glenn Close found the Alberta character rather compelling. Daniels felt it necessary to point out that White women do indeed exist, live among Black people, which was intriguing to Close. She also wanted to represent the character of Alberta as a complex and interesting one, trying her best to exemplify the difficulties of the provincial Bourgeoise.

The Film’s Plot

‘The Deliverance’ centers on a dysfunctional family where Ebony, a single mother, is depicted by Andra Day. Feeling financially unstable, having alcohol dependence, Ebony, along with her children and her mother, named Alberta, relocate to a new house in Indiana. They realize that there is a demon that resides in the house they newly moved to and this leads to very horrendous incidents occurring. This paper will focus on topics of family, fear and specters in the movie.

On-Screen Chemistry

Andra Day, who plays Ebony, praised Close for her portrayal of Alberta. Day noted that Close’s performance was legendary and deeply impactful. Offscreen, the two actresses developed a strong bond, which helped them handle the intense emotions and conflicts their characters face in the film. Day mentioned that their mutual support was crucial for managing the emotional weight of their roles.
