Beyoncé Threatens Legal Action Over Unauthorized Use of Her Song

Beyoncé is taking a firm stand against the Trump campaign for using her song “Freedom” without permission. The song, from her 2016 album Lemonade, was used in a recent campaign video shared by Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung.

Unauthorized Use of the Song

On August 20, 2024, the Trump campaign posted a video showing Donald Trump arriving in Michigan, with Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” playing in the background. The video was captioned, “Touchdown in Michigan!! @realDonaldTrump.”

The song features Kendrick Lamar and has been associated with political campaigns, often used by Democratic nominee Kamala Harris at various events. Beyoncé’s team has not yet publicly commented, but Rolling Stone reported that they are preparing to issue a cease-and-desist order against the campaign for using the song without approval.

Similar Incident with Céline Dion

This situation echoes a recent issue with Céline Dion. Earlier in August, Dion’s management criticized the Trump campaign for playing her hit song “My Heart Will Go On” at a rally in Montana. Dion’s team stated that the song was used without permission and did not indicate her support for the campaign.

Beyoncé’s Political Stance

Though Beyoncé has not officially supported Kamala Harris, she has shown support for the Democratic party in the past. She performed the national anthem at Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2013 and endorsed Joe Biden on social media in 2020.

Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, has publicly supported Harris, posting a photo with the vice president and expressing her endorsement on Instagram.
