Is "Alien: Romulus" Linked to "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant"? An Exploration

The Alien franchise has always been known for mixing science fiction with horror, and it continues this tradition with its latest film, Alien: Romulus. Released on August 16, 2024, and directed by Fede Alvarez, this new installment not only introduces fresh storylines but also cleverly ties back to earlier films in the series, including Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Here’s how Alien: Romulus connects to these previous movies.

The Setting and Plot

Alin: Romulus takes place in the new timeline within the Alien franchise. The plot is concentrated on the young colonizers who found the wreckage of a spaceship in the Romulus space station. To their horror, while they struggle to save the ship, they are threatened by deadly xenomorphs triggering several terribly tragic incidents.

While the characters from Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are not directly present in Alien: Romulus there are connections to these movies with help of vital pieces, including the black slime.

The Black Goo

Black goo was first used in the Prometheus movie although there has been vague indication of an earlier use. This substance is extremely toxic and can be a matter of either creation or destruction with respect to other living beings. In Prometheus, the goo was to tweak life on different planets by the engineers. Alien: Covenant elaborated it where the supposed android ‘David’ manipulated the black goo to exterminate the engineers and in a way fabricated xenomorphs.

In Alien: Once more, Romulus, the black goo is an important factor. The company of the ‘Alien’ series, Weyland-Yutani, is able to retrieve the now wreckage of the Nostromo, the ship from the first Alien movie. In the remains of the craft they locate a xenomorph, and proceed to carry out tests on it. These are the activities through which they create what they refer to as the Prometheus strain, which is derived from the black goo. The corporation of Weyland-Yutani expects it will cause human evolution into a higher species.

The Hybrid Creature

One of the more disturbing scenes is when a pregnant woman named Kay is shot and very badly wounded; she administers the Prometheus strain to herself in order to save her own life and the life of her unborn child. Alas, this contributes to a terrifying change of form. Finally, there is a scene of childbirth, for which, as a result, the wife of one of the engineers gives birth to a creature, a xenomorph body and an engineer’s head. Out of this hybrid, the main antagonist in the film is formed.

The final battle between the characters and the hybrid creature is intense. The creature is eventually defeated and expelled into space by a character named Rain, concluding the film’s storyline. However, this ending leaves room for potential future sequels.
