A Dream Come True

Diego Luna was not only a man of great acting potential but he was an actor on his own before joining Star Wars. Nevertheless, being an actor in Rogue One is something special this actor has done in his career. Speaking to Variety in a 2023 interview, Luna said he was thrilled to be part of such a big thing and be amongst the few. He said he had never heard of such levels of secrecy around a project.

As one of Diego Luna major worries, it was his accent. At first, he did not know how he would belong to the Bros, Stars, Wars film because his tone of voice dialect did not fit the typical stereotype of the franchise. To this he remembers speaking to director Gareth Edwards, who cleared him saying that his accent would not pose a problem in the film. Edwards loved Luna’s previous work, and wished to use this style and realism in Rogue One.

Connecting with the Role

Diego Luna played Tenoch in Y Tu Mamá También in 2001 where he pulled off an ecstatic performance that helped him to prepare on how to perform Rogue One. The nature of the character as fully realized and believable in the film informed Edwards and Tony Gilroy’s ideas about Luna as Cassian Andor. In Andor, Luna provided an earthy, believable character and it was quite refreshing from the usual mythos of Star Wars.

A New Approach to Star Wars

In both seasons of Andor, Luna and the show’s creator, Tony Gilroy, wanted to leave the path of typical Star Wars stories. Gilroy’s direction was clear, there is a certain innocence beneath these series and thus the series should seem as all natural and real as possible. He told the team to steer clear of anything that looked even slightly staged or cheesy in comparison to Star Wars.
