Sofia Vergara, best known for her role in Modern Family, recently talked about how she prepared for her role as Griselda Blanco in the Netflix series Griselda. Griselda Blanco was a famous Colombian drug lord who became very powerful in the Miami drug scene. Vergara had to undergo a big physical transformation to play this challenging role.

Why Sofia Vergara Wanted to Play Griselda
Sofia Vergara was a bit influenced by her adrenaline and passion that she had for the role play of Griselda Blanco. Griselda was not beautiful nonetheless she had a charm that was distinctive that Vergara wished to convey on the large screen. In this, Vergara said that it was necessary to convey Griselda’s strength and allure.
The Transformation Process
For her transformation to Griselda Blanco, Vergara had to undergo more than four hours’ worth of hair and makeup. This was done using prosthetics, makeup, as well as hair that had been done in such a manner such that it went round her head.
Vergara had a specific problem, which was to make her arms seem bigger and stronger. Rayson obtained her natural arms which were thin, not the kind of arms that are synonymous with the toiled image of Griselda. Therefore, she had the choice of using material to cover her arms and also padding to give a look of danger. She also had to wear binding under garments so as to restrict the movements of her body in a way that would suit the character.
Sofia Vergara was very careful to ensure that her role as Griselda was not in any way similar to her role in the comedy series, Modern Family. Such stimuli can be quite complex and encompass everything from one’s gait and voice to the very expressions on one’s face, as she did in order to transform herself. Vergara insisted that people should watch Griselda to be reminded that they are watching Vergara and not a screaming Gloria.
Praise from the Show’s Co-Creator
Eric Newman, the co-creator of Griselda also joined in the appreciation of Sofia Vergara saying that she was dedicated and hard working. He said he always knew she was capable of being cast in such a sinister and dramatic role and particularly because she is so good at handling comedy. Newman liked that Vergara, for this part, was willing to go through the pains of portraying such a character as Griselda.
Sofia Vergara also shared that this role was tough because it was her first time acting in Spanish, her first drama role, and her first time playing a real person. She wanted to make sure she did justice to Griselda’s complex character and made her seem real to the audience.
