What is “Blink Twice” About?
Set in a city of deputies, Blink Twice stars Naomi Ackie as Frida, a cocktail waitress. They are released in less than a year from each other, though plotlines are completely different: she falls in love with the tech billionaire Slater King, portrayed by Channing Tatum, during a fabulous fundraiser gala. Slater takes Frida to his private island for what turns out to be the honeymooners’ dream holiday. However, there is a twist of events when the inhabitants of the island experience weird occurrences of events. Frida quickly becomes the protagonist who has to deal with mystery and get to the hearts of truths while being in mortal danger.
Zoe Kravitz’s Inspiration for the Film
Zoe Kravitz said that the inspiration has always been stories, particularly ones that look at human behavior or interpersonal relationships. ‘She wished to make a film that is close to life, reflecting the problems and invasions of the power-related issues that people, particularly the female gender, go through in their ordinary lives.’
In the interview, Kravitz said that as she got older, she began to open her eyes and realize the complicated layers of the dynamics between people and the subliminal ‘game’ that is played. Such an understanding motivated her to write a story that turned around such relations.
Exploring Themes of Power and Control
Of all the aspects that dominate Blink Twice, power is usage, the attempts to cease it, and the battles against it. Zoe Kravitz desired to know what happens when women become no longer obedient to the male civil society’s prescriptions for womanly behavior. She took the analogy of the first woman, Eve, in the Garden of Eden and thought of what it would be like if Eve saw that she was not in the best place and wanted to make her own decisions.
Kravitz’s Writing Process
Out of the cinema, Zoe Kravitz has been working on the script of Blink Twice since 2017, motivated by the idea of making a film that hasn’t been made before. As she wrote, current actual happenings such as the MeToo movement, the case of such notorious personalities as Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein influenced her narrative. These events foreground the aspect of power and dominance present in this narrative and these aspects Kravitz incorporated into her movie.
Why This Film is Important to Kravitz
Thus, for Zoe Kravitz, shooting Blink Twice was not only about setting a message but to establish an artifact that would have a profound impact on spectators. What she aimed at was an honest movie that would be interesting at the same time, a movie that would stir people’s minds and leave them spellbound by its plot.
Kravitz also argues that films have all the ability to help people begin discussions on certain topics, and they cause shifts in perspective. With Blink Twice, she wants her audiences to do exactly that: to look at the uncomfortable things in life, power and control and do it with feelings deep in their souls.
The Cast and Production
Blink Twice is an Amazon MGM Studios production and stars Channing Tatum, Naomi Ackie, Christian Slater, Geena Davis among others. The film is currently scheduled for release by Warner Bros. Picture in theaters, across multiple countries, worldwide and Kravitz is eager to see the reception of her directorial debut.
