Farida Jalal, known for her iconic roles in Indian cinema, recently appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.” Her performance was highly praised, reaffirming her status as one of the best actors of her generation. Despite this success, Jalal is eager for more substantial roles.
Desire for Diverse Roles
In an interview with the Times of India, Farida Jalal expressed her wish to take on more diverse and challenging roles. She mentioned that she often gets typecast in similar roles, such as playing a mother or grandmother. “I feel like they just bring me another mother or grandmother role. It’s the same old thing. I’m disappointed that makers don’t think I can do more than that. I want to do something exciting,” she said.

Comparison with Male Actors
Jalal compared her situation to that of her male counterparts, like the late Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher. She pointed out that these actors were given the chance to play a wide variety of characters, including villains and comedians, and were not limited to just fatherly roles. Jalal hopes that filmmakers will start offering more diverse roles to senior female actors as well.
Contentment and Aspiration
While Farida Jalal is grateful for the roles she has received, she still aspires to play more substantial characters. She emphasized her love for acting and her desire to show her full potential. “I am making the most of my opportunities,” she said, “but I do aspire for more substantial characters.”
Ongoing and Upcoming Projects
Farida Jalal continues to work actively in the film industry. She appeared in Saif Ali Khan’s movie “Jawaani Jaaneman” in 2020 and “Ittu Si Baat” in 2022. Recently, she was seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series “Heeramandi.”
Looking forward, Farida Jalal mentioned that she has completed a few new projects, including “Dua Qubool” and a film marking the debut of late music composer Aadesh Shrivastava’s son. She expressed her excitement about these projects and her determination to keep working indefinitely. “I love my work and will continue to work as long as I can,” she asserted.
