Surekha Sikri in Balika Vadhu

Surekha Sikri is perhaps best known for her role as Kalyani Devi Singh, or Dadi Sa, in Balika Vadhu. This show, which aired from 2008 to 2016, made her a household name. Her character, Kalyani Devi, started as a strict and traditional matriarch who often favored her grandson, Jagdish, over his wife, Anandi. Over time, her character evolved, showing a more loving and understanding side, which endeared her to viewers. Her portrayal was so powerful that it remains one of her most remembered roles.

Surekha Sikri in Tehreer- Munshi Premchand Ki

She also delivered a memorable performance in Mammo, where she played a widow sister to Farida Jalal. In Zubeidaa, she shared the screen with Karisma Kapoor, and her role in Badhaai Ho won her another National Award.

Besides acting, Surekha was known for her strong opinions and belief that cinema should reflect society. She initially wanted to become a writer and was deeply involved in theatre. In 1989, she was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contributions to Hindi theatre.

Sikri’s passing on July 16, 2021, due to cardiac arrest, left a significant void in the entertainment industry. Her legacy, however, lives on through her unforgettable performances.
