The narrative starts as mystery writer Alan Conway is writing his newest book, "Magpie Murders." Atticus Pünd, a private eye in Conway's novels set in 1950s England, is modelled after Agatha Christie. A draught of the book is handwritten by Conway, who then types it.

Literary editor Susan Ryeland is negotiating a contract at the Frankfurt Book Fair for Conway's publishing house. Andreas, her boyfriend, pays her a surprise visit.

 When Susan returns to the office, her boss informs her that Conway has completed the manuscript and that she will take over as CEO once their company is acquired by a larger publisher.
