Disney releases the first teaser featuring Halle Bailey as Ariel from "The Little Mermaid"

Time to meet a brand-new Disney princess in real life. Today at D23, the first trailer for the live-action version of "The Little Mermaid" debuted, giving us our first look at Halle Bailey in the lead role.

The development of "The Little Mermaid," which is loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and was first discussed back in 2016, accelerated when Deadline revealed that Lin-Manuel Miranda would co-produce with Marc Platt and write songs with returning composer and Disney legend Alan Menken.

"The Little Mermaid" is based on the 1989 animated film of the same name, which itself is loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale.

Later in the year, casting would pick up, with Variety confirming that Melissa McCarthy had been chosen for the role of sea witch Ursula, Awkwafina for the role of Scuttle,

and Jacob Tremblay for the role of Ariel's best friend Flounder. Of course, Bailey's casting as Ariel happened later that year.

The first teaser, which was released on Twitter, opens with a beautiful underwater scene before revealing Bailey as Ariel as she and Flounder explore a shipwreck.

Disney concluded the clip with Bailey's beautiful performance of "Part of Your World," serenading the sky above, as if they knew just what the fans wanted. Unsurprisingly, comments from fans quickly poured in.

The reaction to the teaser seems to be largely good thus far. Many fans appeared unable to express their joy coherently in their all-caps comments to Disney's tweet, while others assured that they will be in the theatre to see the film when it opens.

Twitter user @algerian praised the next movie's potential brilliance by writing, "I feel a #RENAISSANCE forming," a reference to Beyoncé's most recent studio album and probably also to the original animated film that helped spark the Disney Renaissance of the 1990s.

Halle Bailey has received the most of the acclaim, and properly so; many users have praised her voice and beauty.
