Tom Hanks recently shared an interesting detail about his and Robin Wright’s new movie, Here, where he says that there is “some version” of their famous characters from Forrest Gump. The two actors reunite for this generational drama, 30 years after their iconic roles as Forrest and Jenny in the 1994 classic.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hanks explained that while he plays a character named Richard in Here, some traits of Forrest Gump can still be seen in him. He also mentioned that both he and Robin Wright carry a bit of their past roles into new projects, even if they play very different characters. For example, Hanks’ role as Chuck in Castaway and Wright’s role as the Queen in Beowulf also reflect some of the character qualities they brought from Forrest Gump.

Hanks described how both actors have played characters who wrestle with life’s big decisions. He pointed out that the themes in Here—like becoming a parent and dealing with the challenges that come with it—are similar to the challenges Forrest and Jenny faced in Forrest Gump. Hanks said that Here also looks at these personal struggles as characters “cross a rubicon,” or a major life change.
In Here, Hanks plays Richard, a man who finds himself in a complex relationship with his high school sweetheart, Margaret, played by Robin Wright. They end up living together in Richard’s family home after an unexpected pregnancy. While Richard sees the house as a safe haven, Margaret feels trapped, which creates tension between them.
Director Robert Zemeckis, who worked with Hanks and Wright on Forrest Gump, also agreed with Hanks’ views about how their past roles influenced their performances in Here. He added that the “here” in the movie takes on a different meaning for each character, helping to weave the movie’s themes together.
The film is about a couple’s journey through love, loss, and the challenges that come with family life. It shows how people grow, change, and face the big moments that life throws at them. Tom Hanks and Robin Wright’s reunion in Here promises to bring some emotional depth, while reflecting on their unforgettable roles from Forrest Gump.
