Powell admitted that being a struggling actor in Hollywood was one of the toughest experiences of his life. He explained that the entertainment industry often makes an actor’s worth feel tied to their most recent role, which can be exhausting and discouraging.
The actor confessed that sometimes, he had to lie to himself to stay motivated during the hard times. “You have to believe in the Hollywood legends of those people you admire,” he said. He reminded himself that even successful stars once went through tough times.

Powell also talked about how difficult it is to even get an audition, let alone land a role. He explained that preparing for auditions involves not only acting skills but also spending money on things like headshots and an agent. “Auditioning feels like you’re at the party. You’ve gotten past the velvet rope,” Powell said, describing how even the chance to audition feels like a victory in such a competitive environment.
Though the journey was tough, Powell’s persistence paid off when he landed his breakout role in Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Since then, he has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors, proving that the struggle was worth it.
