James Van Der Beek Discusses Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis and Shares Optimism for Recovery

James Van Der Beek, famous for his roles in One Tree Hill and Dawson’s Creek, has revealed that he is battling colorectal cancer. In a recent statement to PEOPLE, he said, “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.” Despite this challenging news, he expressed optimism, stating, “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

James Van Der Beek’s Cancer Journey

Colorectal cancer affects the colon or rectum and can spread to the intestines. James Van Der Beek has continued to work during his treatment; he recently appeared in an episode of the TV show Walker and is set to star in a new film called Sidelined: The QB and Me, which will be released on Tubi on November 29.

Family is very important to James. He lives with his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah. Earlier this year, the family traveled to Egypt, where they shared many joyful moments. James described the trip as a magical experience, saying, “With all my vocabulary, ‘Wow’ is what fell out of my mouth most of the time.”

In December, James will participate in a special show called The Real Full Monty. This event features male celebrities who strip down to raise awareness about prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer testing and research. The show is inspired by the 1997 film The Full Monty and will air on December 9.
