David Spade’s SNL Characters’ Misconceptions

He recounted that fans and even people around him would ask him about the sexuality of his roles, assuming all of them were gay. Spade shared a particular story about a character he played as a receptionist. In the sketch, he would be dismissive of others, with responses like, “Oh, and you are…? And this is regarding…?” This aloof attitude led viewers to believe the character was gay. When people asked him if that was the case, Spade would reply, “I don’t think it’s gay,” but they insisted otherwise.

Even Spade’s own mother thought that he might be coming out due to the characters he played. Reflecting on this, Spade humorously said that looking back, he can see why people had that impression.

However, Spade emphasized that these roles were never about sexuality. As the podcast host Dana Carvey explained, the characters were more about personality and behavior than any specific orientation.

David Spade, known for his sarcastic style, also starred in other popular shows and films after his time on SNL, including Just Shoot Me! and Joe Dirt. His unique sense of humor and memorable characters continue to entertain audiences today.
