Choi Soon-hwa, an 80-year-old model from South Korea, recently captured global attention for her inspiring attempt to become the oldest contestant in the Miss Universe pageant. Competing in the Miss South Korea Universe 2024 contest, she faced much younger participants but proved that age is just a number when it comes to chasing your dreams.
Choi Soon-hwa Inspires Millions
Despite the fact that Choi could not capture the title, her aggressive attempt to clinch the championship has seen her become an overnight social media ‘phenomenon’. Miss South Korea Universe 2024 winner, fashion student Han Ariel, 22, will compete at Miss Universe finals in New Mexico, USA as planned in November, 2024. Although real accomplishment regrettably eluded Choi on this occasion, he was awarded the Best Dresser Award at the show.

Choi is a lady in her 70s who used to work for hospital caregivers before she ventured into modeling. Her problems arose in her 50s including financial issues and after consultation with a patient, she became a model. She never stopped exercising and at 74 she got her chance to walk the ramp at Seoul Fashion Week. She then left everyone and has graced the pages of magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, and advertised for big brands in South Korea.
Choi was 10 years old at the first Miss Universe contest that was held in 1952. She sure had a story to tell and a good example of how one cannot be too old to chase a dream. When interviewed in relation to the contest, Choi confessed that: “even at this age, she had the courage of taking an opportunity and challenge.”
Her story is even more inspiring given that the Miss Universe Organization has recently decided to cancel the age limit by the beginning of the year, which means that each woman of any age can take part in the competition. It created an opportunity for Choi indeed to perform in the contest, although she failed to become the queen, she has influenced millions.
