Background of the Case

The conflict arose from a defamation case wherein Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife Amber Heard for defamation. The libel suit was filed by Depp over the opinion piece that Heard penned for one of the largest selling newspapers where she suggested that Depp was abusive during their marriage. Although she didn’t name Depp in the list, everybody understood it was him; this publication, Depp said, harmed him personally and professionally. He wished to sue Heard for $50 million in damages for what he said were defamation, abusing and falsely accusing him to the public.

This trial lasted for approximately six weeks in which both the actors were involved in giving their defense and evidence on the case. Johnny Depp The public followed through the coverage that was done by the media in relation to the trial and this made it to be well known all over the world.

The Jury’s Decision

After nearly thirteen hours of deliberation, the jury ruled in favor of Johnny Depp. They found that Johnny Depp Heard’s statements were defamatory and awarded Depp $15 million in damages. This amount included $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. However, due to Virginia state law, which caps punitive damages at $350,000, Depp’s total award was reduced to about $10.35 million.

On the other hand, Johnny Depp Amber Heard also had her day in court. She counter-sued Depp for $100 million, claiming that his legal team made defamatory statements that harmed her reputation. While the jury did not fully side with Heard, they did agree that one of Depp’s lawyers made a defamatory statement about her. As a result, Heard was awarded $2 million in damages.

Impact on Their Careers

The trial was rather fateful for both actors. Johnny Depp who acted in the popular movies such as Pirates of The Caribbean series and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them had challenges even prior to the trial. He was fired from the Fantastic Beasts film series, and his part was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen. This trial actually added more confusion to his career and placed his future in Hollywood in the state of the unknown.

Amber Heard’s career decline has also been evident. It was widely claimed that her role was cut to a minimum for part two of the Aquaman series. Although she was an important character in the first movie, there were reports that she was to appear in the sequel for only ten minutes at most. This decrease is thought to have resulted from the adverse press coverage on the trial.

Broader Implications

Apart from the pecuniary damages it produced, the trial showed how other high-profile defamation cases may be addressed in future.
