Why Meryl Streep Didn’t Return
Mamma Mia impressed a number of audiences when it came to theaters and Meryl Streep portrayed the character of Donna Sheridan, a complex woman, who is a mother and also manages a hotel known as Villa Donna. Viewers waited to see more in the Sequel. The director of the second movie is Ol Parker. He stated that it was a challenge to come up with a story that would make sense if there was going to be a sequel. He said that although the studio asked for another movie, not all tales require a sequel, which in turn limits the creation of a fresh story.
The Decision to Make a Prequel
They might have tried to expand the story from where it was left in the present, to Donna’s earlier years but opting for flashbacks. According to Richard Curtis, one of its writers, his daughter suggested making a movie about Donna’s life before the events of the first film. In order to achieve this they then determined that the character of Donna would be one that has died between the first and second films. This permitted them to tell more of her story in a different method.
Well, Donna was not even featured in the second movie but Meryl Streep came in a brief appearance as a ghost of Donna. She sang a few lines of a few songs before contributing a heartfelt segment to the movie before finally exiting out.
