Singer Sona Mohapatra has strongly criticised rapper Badshah over his recently released song Tateeree. The track sparked controversy because of its lyrics and visuals, which many people considered objectionable and disrespectful towards women. The Haryanvi song was released on March 1 but was later removed by Badshah after facing heavy criticism.
Sona Mohapatra shared her thoughts on Instagram and said the problem was not just about one song. She explained that many songs in popular music follow a similar pattern where women are shown in a stereotypical way while male singers portray themselves as powerful or irresistible heroes.
“This Isn’t Creativity,” Says Sona Mohapatra
In her statement, Sona Mohapatra said that this type of portrayal of women has become a lazy trend in pop culture. She pointed out that songs often include lines suggesting women are obsessed with the male singer, which she believes reduces women to objects in the story.
She said such ideas are repeated again and again in music videos and lyrics, making them feel predictable and harmful. According to her, real creativity should challenge stereotypes rather than repeat them for commercial success.
Badshah Removes Song and Issues Apology
After the backlash, Badshah — whose real name is Aditya Prateek Singh — apologised and removed Tateeree from his social media platforms. In his apology video, he mentioned that he is a “son of Haryana” and said he never intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

However, Sona Mohapatra felt that this explanation was not enough. She responded by saying that artists hold influence over society and must be careful about the messages they send through their work.
Responsibility of Artists in Popular Culture
Sona Mohapatra also spoke about the social impact of such content. She highlighted that Haryana already struggles with serious issues related to gender equality and violence against women. Because of this, she believes cultural content should promote respect rather than reinforce harmful attitudes.
She emphasised that artists play an important role in shaping public imagination. According to her, musicians have two choices: they can either challenge misogyny or profit from it.
Police Case Filed Over ‘Tateeree’ Song
The controversy around Tateeree also reached legal authorities. A resident of Panchkula filed a complaint about the lyrics and visuals in the music video. Following the complaint, Haryana Police registered a First Information Report (FIR).
The case includes sections of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, specifically Sections 3 and 4. Authorities also applied Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with obscene acts and songs.
The incident has started a wider conversation in the entertainment industry about responsible storytelling in music and the impact of lyrics on society.
