A.R. Rahman to Add Dagar Brothers Credit in Ponniyin Selvan II Song After Supreme Court Hearing

A.R. Rahman to Add Dagar Brothers Credit in Ponniyin Selvan II Song After Supreme Court Hearing

Music composer A.R. Rahman has agreed to add a special credit line for the Dagar brothers in the song Veera Raja Veera from the film Ponniyin Selvan II. The decision was shared in the Supreme Court during a recent hearing in New Delhi.

The matter was related to the classical base of the song. The court had earlier suggested that Rahman and the film’s makers could give some form of acknowledgement to the legendary Dagar brothers, even though the original film credits already mentioned that the composition was based on the Dagarvani Dhrupad tradition.

What Change Will Be Made in the Credits?

During the hearing, senior advocate A.M. Singhvi, who appeared for A.R. Rahman and the filmmakers informed the court that they were willing to add a detailed line in the credits.

The new credit line will mention that the composition is inspired by the Dagarvani tradition of Dhrupad and was first recorded as Shiv Stuti by late Ustad Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar and Ustad Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar, known as the Junior Dagar brothers.

This addition is meant to clearly acknowledge the contribution of the Dagar brothers to the classical music tradition that inspired the song.

Supreme Court’s Observation on the Dispute

The Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, noted that the issue involved respected names from the Indian music industry. The court had earlier encouraged both sides to find a balanced solution, especially on the matter of giving proper recognition.

At the same time, the court made it clear that this change in the credit line is limited to acknowledgment only. It does not affect the ongoing copyright case filed by Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar, who is the successor of the Dagar brothers.

The legal questions raised in the copyright suit will continue to be examined separately. All legal options remain open for both sides.

When Will the Credits Be Updated?

The Supreme Court said that the modification in the film credits should be completed within four to five weeks. This means future versions or displays of Ponniyin Selvan II will carry the updated acknowledgement.

About Ponniyin Selvan II and Veera Raja Veera

Ponniyin Selvan II, directed by Mani Ratnam, is a major Tamil historical drama that also found a wide audience across India. The song Veera Raja Veera, composed by A.R. Rahman stood out for its powerful classical touch.

With this new credit line, the film will now officially highlight the inspiration drawn from the Dagarvani Dhrupad tradition and the Junior Dagar brothers. The move brings focus to India’s rich classical music heritage while also addressing concerns raised in court.

This development marks an important moment where creative work and classical legacy have been acknowledged together in a respectful way.
