Jana Nayagan delay leaves theatres facing Rs 100 crore losses as CBFC stays silent on release status

Jana Nayagan delay leaves theatres facing Rs 100 crore losses as CBFC stays silent on release status

Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited film Jana Nayagan is stuck in uncertainty, and the delay is now causing serious problems for theatre owners in Tamil Nadu. The film was originally planned for a Pongal theatrical release, but it failed to hit screens due to issues related to certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Even after multiple court cases, there is still no clear update on when the film will be released.

CBFC refuses to share certification details

The confusion around Jana Nayagan increased after the CBFC said it cannot share any information about the film’s certification process. The Chennai regional officer of the censor board clearly stated that all examination and review procedures are confidential. He explained that no details can be revealed to the public until the film officially receives a certificate. Any update, he said, will only be communicated through the CBFC’s online portal once the process is complete.

This statement has disappointed many in the industry, as rumours were spreading that the producers had agreed to take the film to a review committee. With the CBFC choosing silence, the wait continues.

Theatre owners face massive financial losses

While producers are affected, the biggest impact is being felt by theatre owners. Trade experts have said that Tamil Nadu theatres may have already suffered losses of more than Rs 100 crore because Jana Nayagan did not release during Pongal. The festival season is one of the most important periods for cinemas, and Vijay’s film was expected to be the biggest draw.

Theatres had prepared for huge crowds, extra shows, and strong advance bookings. However, with the film being stalled, many cinema halls were left without a major release, affecting overall box office collections across the state.

Why Jana Nayagan was crucial for Pongal

Jana Nayagan was not just another festival release. The film holds special importance because it is said to be Vijay’s last movie before he fully steps into politics. This factor alone had created massive excitement among audiences and theatre owners. A Pongal release was expected to bring record-breaking numbers, with estimates suggesting the film could have earned between Rs 150 to 200 crore in Tamil Nadu.

In comparison, Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, which was released during the same period, reportedly earned around Rs 55 crore in the state. Trade experts believe that if Jana Nayagan had been released as planned, the overall festival box office would have been much stronger.

Release schedules disrupted for months

The delay of Jana Nayagan has also created a chain reaction in the industry. Theatre owners have said that upcoming Tamil films are now facing scheduling problems because screens were blocked in expectation of Vijay’s film. With no confirmed release date, it has become difficult to plan future releases, leading to uncertainty for producers and distributors alike.

Vijay reacts to the censor issue

Vijay has finally spoken about the situation in a private conversation with a senior journalist. While remaining calm and composed, the actor reportedly expressed disappointment over the delay. He shared that he feels bad for the producer of Jana Nayagan, who is stuck due to circumstances beyond control. Vijay also mentioned that he had expected his films to face challenges because of his political entry.

As of now, Jana Nayagan remains unreleased, with the next court hearing still pending. Until the CBFC completes its process and issues a certificate, theatres, producers, and audiences can only wait. The delay has already caused major financial damage, and the industry hopes for a resolution soon.
